About the Job

We are seeking a talented Lighting Designer for remote or hybrid work based out of our Chicago or Denver office.

In this role you will be responsible for working on lighting designs, fixture selection, lighting controls, sustainability, and developing a full range of presentation material and technical drawings. Our ideal candidate has solid experience designing lighting on multiple project types from concept through construction phases, an eye for detail, and collaborates effectively to bridge between senior and junior staff.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Work with the design team to understand design objectives and develop lighting design concepts on projects
  • Develop graphic presentation materials and proof of concept studies
  • Perform lighting calculations, analysis, and comparative studies to inform luminaire selection
  • Work under the guidance of senior staff to prepare design documentation, including luminaire specifications, lighting and control layouts and schedules, details, drawings and document sets in Revit or AutoCAD
  • Participate in ongoing communication and meetings with in-house and project design team
  • Participate in construction phase activities such as reviewing lighting submittals, attending site visits, and participating in on-site lighting aim and focus
  • Guide in-house Lighting Specialists in project tasks and software proficiency
  • Effectively manage tasks and time across multiple projects, sometimes with overlapping deadlines
  • Contribute to ongoing improvements in AKLD processes and standards

To join us, you should have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Interior Design or a related field. Lighting Design minor or certificate preferred
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in architectural lighting design
  • Working knowledge of the art and science of lighting design through all phases of design and construction, preferably in multiple market sectors
  • A passion for excellence demonstrated through accuracy and attention to detail
  • A collaborative, “can do” attitude
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Working knowledge of sustainable design practices
  • Proficiency in either AGI32 or Dialux, Revit, AutoCAD, Photoshop, InDesign and Microsoft Office (required)
  • Proficiency in Enscape, Rhino, Illustrator and SketchUp (preferred)

About the Job

We are seeking a talented Senior Lighting Designer for remote or hybrid work based out of our Chicago or Denver office.

In this role you will be responsible for establishing lighting design and controls concepts and methods, acting as liaison with the client and project team, managing projects, overseeing designers, and facilitating all aspects of lighting design and documentation. Our ideal candidate has extensive lighting industry experience, is well respected in the design community, and thrives on guiding and mentoring other designers.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Develop core lighting design concepts on projects and clearly convey these through use of presentations and other graphic tools
  • Work with the project team to develop both the artistic and technical aspects of the lighting design, from concept design through construction administration
  • Oversee development of lighting and controls design documentation, including luminaire specifications, photometrics, mockups, drawings, details, and controls selections
  • Serve as primary point of contact for the client, maintaining key relationships
  • Act as liaison between in-house team and project design team, including architects, interior designers, landscape architects, electrical engineers, and contractors
  • Mentor other in-house team members, including Lighting Designers and Lighting Specialists
  • Maintain design vision within the constraints of budget and schedule
  • Direct in-house team’s priorities for time management across multiple projects, sometimes with overlapping deadlines
  • Manage multiple projects through effective communication and collaboration both in-house and with the broader design team
  • Support marketing efforts and assist in determining appropriate fees and workplans
  • Contribute to AKLD’s knowledge base across market sectors, including sustainability

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Interior Design or a related field. Lighting Design minor or certificate preferred
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in architectural lighting design
  • Extensive knowledge of the art, science, and business of lighting design through all phases of design and construction in market sectors including hospitality, residential, and commercial / corporate
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent presentation skills, both graphic and “in the room”
  • LEED accreditation or up-to-date knowledge of sustainable design certification protocols
  • Proficiency in either AGI32 or Dialux, Revit, AutoCAD and Microsoft Office (required)
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Suite, Enscape, and Rhino (preferred)

Are you a student or upcoming graduate studying lighting design as part of an engineering or design program? Do you have a passion for design, sustainability and creative problem solving? Are you seeking an exciting job opportunity where you can experience the field of lighting design within a collaborative multidisciplinary environment?

AKLD Lighting Design offers talented professionals the opportunity to transform visions into designs that illuminate some of the most impressive buildings in the world. We are currently seeking a student intern lighting designer to spend the summer working with our award-winning Lighting Design group. The candidate would be responsible for working on lighting designs, fixture selection, lighting controls, energy code compliance and all aspects of lighting design and documentation. The preferred candidate will be a self-starter that enjoys working collaboratively alongside other creative minds and problem solvers.

This position will be working in-office. Location could be in our Chicago or Denver offices.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Producing lighting layouts in Revit.
  • Photometric calculations utilizing AGI32 or LightStanza software.
  • Energy code compliance calculations.
  • Report writing.
  • Developing presentation materials, renderings, and graphic packages.
  • Developing luminaire schedules and pulling product specification sheets.
  • Develop and review mock-ups.
  • Collaboration with design team

Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Can-do approach to project work and assignments.
  • Competent knowledge of Revit.
  • Familiarity with applications such as SketchUp, Enscape, Navisworks, Lumion, Rhino.
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to research and present design options.
  • Strong prioritization and time-management skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Competent knowledge of and proficiency with photometric calculation software such as LightStanza, AGI32, Dialux, photometric toolbox, and IES files.

Education And Experience

Students actively pursuing a 4-year degree in an accredited design or engineering program with a focus on lighting design.
